Maintenance Tips for Your Garage Floor Coating

by | Apr 11, 2016 | Floor & Roof

Epoxy garage floor coatings are incredibly popular for a few reasons. They’re very resilient and do not stain easily. Also, they look like granite, last as long as granite, and are very affordable to install. Maintaining them is a very simple process. You have to make sure that you are following your maintenance routine, but it is an easy routine to maintain.

Routine Maintenance

The first step in your maintenance schedule should be removing the contents of your garage. You’ll want to pull your cars out and empty out your tools. Then, you’ll want to sweep out the garage so that you’re getting all of the loose dirt and grime that’s sitting on the surface of your floor, as well as hiding in corners. Since you’re just trying to get it out of the garage and not go anywhere specific, many people choose to use a leaf blower. That’s a great option for people in a hurry. You can just open the garage doors and blow the dust and dirt into the driveway.

Next, you want to use a hose with some pressure from the nozzle. Wet the entire floor, applying a good amount of force with the water. Then, with a mop, you’re going to want to push the dirty water out into the driveway. At this point, you need to be careful; epoxy garage floor coating can be slick when wet.

Deeper Cleaning

If you need a deeper cleaning than just sweeping and rinsing out the garage, you should turn to a mop. Fill a mop bucket with hot water and a mild cleaner. The hot water will help lift away any stains and ground-in dirt; moreover, you’re going to want to use a mild cleaner, so you need the heat of the water to help lift away stains.

A ph neutral cleaner is absolutely essential so that abrasive chemicals don’t break down the epoxy. Garage floor coating can last for decades, but you have to make sure that you’re not doing anything to sabotage it. You can easily find a ph neutral cleaner by just reading the back of the bottle. If it is soap-based, it’s probably basic; if it is acid-based, it’s probably acidic.

It might be necessary to use a stiff-bristled brush or broom for stubborn stains. Once that’s finished, let the garage dry and put back all of the contents of the garage.

You should only have to do this about once every season.

An epoxy garage floor coating is an incredibly resilient and attractive choice for your garage floor; however, you need to make sure you are maintaining it properly. When properly maintained, it should last for a very long time.
